Joan loves sharing Always Sam through book presentations and talks in school classrooms, libraries, community centers, bookstores, faith centers, and more. She loves interacting with the children, hearing their thoughts and ideas, and she makes it FUN with her stuffed chameleon puppet, Chamie, and interactive demonstrations with toy chameleons that actually change color in front of your eyes! She can also be available online via Zoom!

We had the pleasure of hosting Joan Tabb at our main Ukiah branch of the Mendocino County Library, and her talk with the kids was fabulous! Attendees learned about the process of writing a picture book from start to finish, including seeing some of the many, many drafts with different titles and character designs, and enjoyed a book reading from the author herself. Most of the children had no idea just how long it can take to write and publish a picture book (4 years for Always Sam!) and were even able to talk with Joan about how they can write their own in the future. They were particularly captivated by Joan’s final discussion question about how they plan to be kind going forward — the children came up with some very heart warming ideas for bringing warmth and kindness into the world. Thank you Joan!

Always Sam expresses Joan’s passion and creativity in educating, developing, and delighting children. Always Sam is an essential story that touches on the painful reality of racism and discrimination, yet it’s crafted gracefully, with a gentle and friendly approach.”
